Re: Fansite Application
Thank you for getting back to me. As much as I want to be featured on your site, I can’t not change my ways. I am not making any money off my site and doing this for fun and for the love of the game. Most casts out there are rated PG13 and while mine is rated R. I bring something completely different for the MMO gaming community. I understand that Turbine has to maintain it’s family image and truly regret that I cannot be a featured site.

Dude… scatman??!? Fool!!! jk.. just jumping on the Rheebus Railroad
Listening now. Havent arrived at the censorship part, but I have to say… wow! You applied as a fansite, not looking for endorsements, just to join a list of sites that push their product in some fashion or other. Naturally it’s ddo’s prerogative to pick and choose who they want to list as “fans”, but quite honestly it’s a little disingenuous to hand pick your fans. haha. damn!
*Perhaps you are better off joining the ranks of those timid souls unwilling to speak their minds. I’ll bet that well over 50% of ddo’s fanbase employ the language or the orcs (I just made that up and demand full credit… haha!) in their chosen communication medium (vent/chat/etc). For those who kick it elven (clean language… another on the spot coinage
) with the intent of making a G rated show… that’s great! But for those that don’t utter orcish because you think that CNN will scoop you up if you can only show a bit of self restraint… I laugh at you, and weep for the endangered sack of masculinity. -

I don’t think DDO actually has the freedom to use other settings. They have the license for Eberron, but if they wanted to use stuff from other settings they’d have to acquire the licenses for those, which cost money. Personally, I’m glad they’re sticking to Eberron and not making some kind of weird nonsensical amalgamation of the various DnD campaign settings.
Rogues can actually make awesome fighters — the problem is that a lot of people build them such that they aren’t very tough. Rogues have some of the best DPS in the game and Way of the Assassin is really cool at high level. If your rogue can’t kill things well, you’re doing something wrong.
I was distracted a bit when I heard it, but did you say that Spell Penetration increased the saving throw DCs for your spells (if not, disregard this paragraph)? It doesn’t actually work that way; Spell Penetration is only for overcoming Spell Resistance. You need a (spell school) Focus item to make it harder for creatures to resist your spells like Sound Burst through a saving throw.
-
Seneca: Wait I thought that Spell Penetration for say +2 makes it either 2 levels higher for an enemy to resist or does it add a +2 to DC saves? Or are you saving it doesn’t add to the DC’s at all and only overcome spell resist, please confirm? If so that really sucks because I have a sword of spell Penetration III. So do I need to pick the feat, that just focused on a school for magic for the resists?

Some monsters have Spell Resistance, which is what Spell Penetration is for. When you cast a spell (some spells, primarily damage spells, bypass SR entirely) which SR can block against a creature who has it, you have to make a caster level check. Your bonus to this check is equal to your caster level, plus Spell Penetration Items, Spell Pen Feats, and Spell Pen Enhancements. If you success, the spell works (though they can still might be entitled to a saving throw, depending on what you cast at them). If you fail, the spell fizzles entirely. It’s like an extra layer of protection against magic for the creature, above and beyond saving throws.
Things with SR don’t usually show up until level 10 or so. Flesh Renders are usually the first thing you see with it, but it doesn’t become prevalent until you hit the Vale where there are lots of outsiders who have substantial SR. For this reason, Spell Penetration is useless early on but vital in the late game.

I had no idea there was any stuff going on with Fansite listings. In DDOcast I’ve always kept it clean, by choice, not due to any kind of thing related to Turbine. I’m just an old broadcaster at heart and prefer to keep it clean. It’s just the way I am, also I receive plenty of emails from people who listen with their kids or at work, so it makes sense for DDOcast.
I would not change a thing, Yak, unless it’s a decision that comes from you. I think it’s great that there’s more than one regular podcast about DDO and I think your show offers a substantially different experience from what mine does. Which is good!
Don’t think that I never have similar thoughts about some things, I just tend to keep some opinions to myself by nature. I like that this show is uncensored, although I might feel kinda hurt if I thought that I was being unfairly spotlighted for comments I made on the forums. I can think of at least one person who has been roughed up on your show that doesn’t deserve it, IMO, but that’s kinda the point: bring some thick skin with you when listening to your show, and say what’s on your mind!
I will be curious to know if a more adult rating has an impact on the business end of things, to the extent you feel like talking about it publicly.
Also, haven’t listened to this ep yet. I’ve been listening during the work week, so I’ll check it out Sunday-Monday while doing some stuff. Keep up the good work!
Jerry (DDOcast)
P.S. – I know I’m a hypocrite to even suggest this, as my own show opening has received lots of hate mail, but I wish you’d do something different for the opening. The original opening might someday run you into certain copyright issues, if nothing else. I’d come up with an open source alternative or make your own! Just a tip, ignore it if you think I’m wrong.
-
@Jerry: As a matter of record, I want to clarify that I was in no way implying that your show is among the “timid souls” who restrain themselves for seemingly arbitrary reasons, which I find incredibly irritating. I listen to a hell of a lot of talk radio (news), and I don’t mind their collective style, which never includes swearing. Nothing in that venue seems contrived, or forced; I feel the same way about your show…. BUT there are others, where you can tell that the host is a prolific swearer and is obviously restraining himself. Maybe everyone wants to create a family show?
RE copyright issues… Are you suggesting that Yak is grossly exceeding “fair use” law?

I don’t know enough about copyright laws to really have an opinion, although I know that on Cyberears they try to be very careful to make sure that no copyrighted material is used. I either make my own music or find open source, Creative Commons or unlicensed music and audio for my show.
I just know that the Guild is pretty big, is tied to NBC and might be a copyright issue if you played it as the opening week after week. I’d hate to see you get a takedown notice over it.
I do know that you can generally use copyrighted music provided you either get permission, use for parody or just use a snipped (usually it’s not a problem if you are only using like 20 seconds of a tune.)
Seems like a DDO-centered theme music choice would be cool. Anyway, listening to the show now, keep it up!

Here’s my comments as I’m listening…
First, I just want to reiterate that I love that your show is here. When I do DDOcast, I’m obviously doing work to create it, research it, etc, so it’s really nice to have a DDO podcast that I can just listen to as a listener, without being involved in its weekly creation.
RE: belching. I’ll admit that it kinda bugs me, but I can deal with it. Depending on what audio editor you use, you may be able to “mark” the audio file as it’s recorded. I use Adobe Audition 3.0 and can hit F8 while recording to leave a red line through the file that I can quickly skip to while editing to remove things like long pauses, belching, that kind of thing.
I actually have two ghost touch sets on my ranger that I really love. The first is two Ghost Touch of Disruption weapons, which is excellent for things like wraiths and other undead incorporeal monsters. The second set is two ghost touch blunt weapons (I got lucky and have one w/pure good, the other of maiming, I think…) that I use for other undead and for skellies (yeah, ghost touch does nothing, but the rest is fine, and it’s an inventory management decision on my part).
I should note that I’ve only heard of one other DDO site not get the fansite status, and that was because the person filled their home page with sort of iffy ads.
The biggest reason to be a fan site is to be able to post in the main splash page of the forums, but I think Yak Cast will be fine without it. Before Turbine created the Fan Site section, I used to post the new ep alerts in the General Forums at DDO.com (in addition to DDO-Europe.com, DDOcast.com, Twitter and the DDOcast forums). I’d consider that route if you are looking to promote.
Another great cast! Keep up the good work.

@Jerry: I think that Ryan was giving you a hard time.
It’s all good and I can’t thank you enough for continuing to mention me on your show and link me. I do post on DDO forums and Twitter. However, I was not aware of DDO-Europe.com. I’ll check out archive.org. I also found some electronic music that an old friend of mine created that I think I will use as well. It’s funny you mention like listening to another cast, as When I did the 3 part series on Ryan’s site it sucked that there wasn’t any new content for me to hear for a month, HAHA. This was before I played DDO or knew about your site. I have your latest cast downloaded and looking forward to hearing it as well. -
