Werds, thanks for the props. Glad you like the SC awhile back, I feared it was too long but it was the time of the year when I thought I could do a longer bit and I had been making lists for a long times working on that bit. And if the man adds any of the spells I talked about or just starts to think about spells as a tool then it was worth it.
As for practiced spellcaster I will not be giving up the fight anytime soon.
-
Samius: No problem! Someone needs to fight this. I mean when I heard your cast on this it brought back memory’s of the old PnP days where a Wizards Spell book defined who they where. It just frustrates me that Turbine/Atari is being lazy and not putting in some of the good spells. I know nothing of programming but I don’t think it would be hard. I am excited about the Pale Master but they need to do more that just that.

Turbine turned into a church the second they stopped thinking about Asheron’s Call and put more time into the LOTRO. When I played AC, Turbine had nothing against people flaming eachother on forums, linking youtube vids that contained people flaming other players and even humiliating other players.
So when i heard that Turbine turned into some carebears, my first thought was “i guess they fired the AC staff”.

Yak, you bad boy…. I bet the staff are talking about you around the water cooler right now. You should know that Tolero is a female, you said “he” but you may have been talkng about Tarrant. She started out as a player of DDO and was hired after many successful community events that she organized including the first DDO party at gen con, which I think she paid for. Gamers have short memories it seems. In any case, she is very well liked by the fan boys. I am sorry for your forums woes, after stalking you… I mean reading some of your posts, I don’t really see anything offensive about them. Next time get us to bump for you!!!
Samius and I will give ya a wave! Good cast btw, I love insight into F2P vs VIP! -

Now that I have more time:
Wizard spells: Yes, more is good. And really, it’s not just wizards — more spells need to be added to the game for everyone. Bards in particular tend to get passed over whenever new spells are released.
Permadeath server: Too much work for too little benefit. Very few people play permadeath to begin with, and there would be annoying technical challenges to deal with when updating servers that play by different rules. Anyone who wants to play permadeath already can; I want the development resources to go to something else, like new spells or new quests.
Psionics: This is just me personally, but I can’t stand psionics in a fantasy setting. They’re in Eberron (albeit easy to ignore if you want), but I wouldn’t care if they never made it in. I fully admit that this is just a personal preference, rather than psionics being an actual bad idea to implement.
Live random quests: It would be nice, but I’d never count on it happening. DDO has certainly grown, but I don’t think Turbine would want to spend the resources on this. Also, if they go through the trouble to make a quest (which each one in DDO has to be hand-crafted), it’s really in their best interest to just make it a regular quest that everyone can enjoy all the time. The cost-benefit works out better that way.
Endgame content: This is the problem with MMOs everywhere; there’s actually quite a bit to do in DDO, but a lot of the veterans who have been playing forever have long since seen and done it all. I can’t say that adding more quests would be a bad idea at all, but I don’t think DDO is starved for content quite like it was at launch (can you imagine Threnal and Tempest’s Spine being the ENDGAME?).
Crafting: Implementing crafting the same way as PnP (or even just requiring the expenditure of feats, skill points, etc) would be a huge mistake. The powergamers would make crafting alts that would be otherwise gimped. The non-powergamers would be lured into gimping their characters with item creation feats and be in even more trouble than they are now. If we get more crafting, it needs to be something that everyone can do that will not require sacrificing any other aspect of the character (AP, skill points, feats, etc).
Voice Chat: It’s always been pretty bad. Usually, it works okay, but if it doesn’t for whatever reason there’s really nothing you can do. I can see why Turbine might’ve gone with a third party — having integrated voice chat when DDO came out was revolutionary and Turbine might not have wanted to do it themselves. Still, it would be nice of they could get away from Gamespy and provide the service on their own.
-
Lessah: I could only hope that Turbine is talking to me at the water cooler. Man, if they are cursing my name out saying shit like, “that fucken Yak”, that would make my month! I don’t think that I am that important to them. Tolero doesn’t sound like a female name, so sorry about that. Well, good for her that she did all that stuff. I thought that she has her fan boys, makes sense. Thank you for seeing the truth in my posts. I would love to talk to Tolero one on one and ask her straight up, what is your fucking deal?
Seneca:
Permadeath Server: There are more people then you think who would want do it DAMN it! I don’t think it would be that hard for Turbine to make this happen and just change what they have already.
Psionics: I just going to pretend you didn’t say anything and move on.
Endgame content: You may be right this is just what I have heard. Being that I can’t stick one toon or server to make it to the end game.
Crafting: Crafting rocks and that’s all I am going to say!!!!
Voice Chat: We agree that the voice chat sucks. If they aren’t going to make it better then they should take it away to force people to rent vent servers.

Permadeath: Honestly, I doubt there are enough people to warrant a server. And really, the way it is now is better — there are permadeath guilds that can filter out all the griefers. Open a permadeath server, and you’d get griefers there who would get people killed just for kicks. And unlike with a permadeath guild, they can’t just say “Oh crap, we let a griefer in the guild, lets just pretend that didn’t happen” — the character now carries a permanent penalty (or is permanently dead, of course).
Crafting: Don’t get me wrong, I like crafting too. I just don’t want to see the PnP system implemented in DDO.
Voice Chat: I’d definitely rather have questionable in game voice chat than none at all. It works for me about 80-90% of the time (and 100% of the time with my guildies) which is enough to make me glad we have it.

I think that the basic non-raid rituals they have now (adamantine, force, force crit, +1 armor, etc) are a great start. If they could implement more things like that — things that anyone could do by collecting the proper ingredients — it would be awesome. It’s not quite the same as other game’s crafting systems (ie, you don’t have to specialize and say I’m a Blacksmith/Skinner/etc), but I think it would work fine for DDO crafting.
-
Lessah: I normally are on at nights. I was doing a cast on the parent site mmo.smacktalk.com. Since I become VIP I bought VET status, so I can make a 4th lvl toon. Anyways, I would love to play a build with you guys. I am not sure what toon I want to play yet. However, if you tell me the name of your toon, same with you Seneca or Samius, then I will add them to my friend and send you a tell next time I am on or an in game mail so you have my toons name, sound good?

Yak: Exactly, Asheron’s Call was like a non-censored pvp heaven, yet this worked due to the mentality of the people that populated the server. Someone flames you, or tries to humiliate you, you simply flame them back or gank them, then post screenshots or vid on forums for everyone to see. Reporting was never an issue. Then again this could have been something to do with the GMS on the Darktide server(PVP server), since I dont know how the GMS were on non-pvp or carebear servers.
Btw, I heard the latest podcast on Ryans site, you guys should definately be able to have your own sticky or own link in the forums. I mean, yea its not for all ages, but still, is it really that hard for them to just add a red line that says “Warning: May not be suitable for all ages, 18 or older recommended” or something, that way, they wont be held accountable for anything, and will have an excuse if an angry parent or whoever comes to complain.
Now I would have also wrote this in the comments on Ryan’s new podcast too, but its down for some reason, so here goes:
To be honest, before I started Darkfall, I was very skeptic about joining it. This was because after I left Asheron’s Call, every MMO I tried after it ended in boredom and eventually to uninstall.
Then one day I decided to check out DFO, after I remembered hearing about it right before I left AC. I did some researching and came back with ALOT of negative feedback. People really crying over what a complete failure AV had made, how it was too hard and how they didnt get what was expected, all kinds of qqness.
Checked some gameplay vids out, looked at the gameplay and thought that it looked pretty cool, but remembering all the negative feedback I was 3 seconds away from closing the tab and heading into some CS, where I would most likely forget and never think about DFO again.
Then I spotted MMOsmacktalk, since I had a google tab open. Clicked it, and listened to a couple of podcasts, including the ones with Apoc.
Now the Apoc ones I really enjoyed, since he was talking about how nothing felt right after AC, which was exactly how I felt. Then he talked about Darkfall, and some of the pvp aspects, and it pretty much lured me in.
I then bought DFO and im happy to say that I have found my game. I have also recently recruited 2 IRL friends to join. Thats 3 subscriptions right there.
So really, you and Ryan are doing AV and Turbine a favor, because this is what people want to know. People want to know what really goes down in the game, not sugar coated crap you can find on the back of the retail box.
I dont see why they dont take the opportunity or atleast have the decency to add people that take time out of their lives to promote their game and talk about their game.
Oh and im not tricking around hahaha :p
I just find it that even though I might not know or understand some of the stuff in your podcasts, since I dont play DDO, I can still listen to it because you dont always talk pure ddo statistics, you also talk about game experiences, forum stuff, personal experiences, etc. So due to that, I can still listen in and enjoy the podcast which is ace.
So yea, sorry if I got a bit deep on you with this 2 page commentary but just had to get that out there.
Big ups on the site and podcasts, will be looking forward to more.

You are always welcome on the DDOcast Forums, I’m not gonna ban ya. I think Turbine’s overreacting in your case as well, although it’s their forums and their rules, ya know? There’s no such thing as Democracy on a web site forum.
Overall, I think Turbine needs to realize that your podcast may well bring some folks to DDO, and keeps current players looking for more engaged in their product. Same with DDOcast.
I can see why they haven’t added you to the fan site list because of language (not the first time this has happened, apparently.) I wouldn’t worry about that, I don’t think that Fan Site list really brings in much traffic. But you should be able to at least post up episode links on their forums!
Yes, the in-game voice chat system sucks. Always has. I too wish it would be overhauled, been a pet peeve issue for years.
Agreed. More/better crafting is very important for DDO’s future. I’ve never understood why DDO has never really figured out crafting.
Nice work as always!

Funny, Tarrant is usually known for his heavy handed moderation, not Tolero.
And remember — 19 infraction points is the goal! It’s like blackjack, except you go bust at 20.
