In response to Jery’s post:
Travel time can be cumbersome. The thing I find that holds me in a game is that you can have adventures just trying to get to a location. It just gives a game a more realistic feel. I originally ran up a wizard in EQ to help with the travel time as well. Wizards and Druids can teleport not only themselves but others as well. Heck I would love to even see pirates or bandits attack while you’re traveling. lol For ex. Taking that boat trip in Everquest would take on a new meaning if half way across your ship came under attack and you had to help defend it along with the NPC( Non-Player Character) crew. I guess a good game design would include both options. -

I was thinking about the Perma Death option you mentioned on the show. In Every Quest they had an option where you completed a quick quest that let you choose to be Player vs. Player or Player vs. Environment player. This changed your avatars status to match the option you chose to play. DDO could just add an option that allowed you to choose Perma death (Makes the person immune to Rez shrines and you could not zone back in the dungeon). The only down side I see to this is that you might play with other players that have no concern if your toon died or not, heck they might even create a situation and let you die on purpose. Due to human nature I would never suggest playing Perma Death with a group that is not also Playing Perma death.
I could see this as the only option that makes sense if DDO refuses to make and manage a server for Perma Death. This is just my opinion and as it is just that. I am sure others have ideas good or bad that would work as well. -

Yes Yak,
Perma Death vs Human Nature.
When dealing with a touchy subject like Perma death in any game you have to look at human nature. People will be spending time creating and making the Avatars. People get attached to them, subconsciously the avatar becomes part of the player and that is when the rule bending begins. That is why I would suggest the option for the Perma Death (Debuff/Option) would have to be chosen early on. You could make it a permanent debuff (my choice) or a group voted debuff before you started an instance.
That is why Diablo is my favorite example of Perma death in Hardcore mode is and always will be the best example. The rules are that you choose Hardcore-mode while you are creating the character. From that point on if you die for any reason whatsoever your character is dead. There are no excuses such as server reset, lag, mobs killing you, you AfK’ed and got eaten by a pack of land dwelling clown fish. Although I think that would be awesome to watch.
No special rules, simply dead or not dead. -

What a great listen has it been! Thanks so much for bringing Roy on, very informative show. I am also one of those people who played DDO only, as MMO. I will surely try out few others, to have understanding of what other games are like. No WoW, though.

PlaneShift looks like totally my kind, waiting for a new machine to come to install it

Nice cast.
Would like to address the darkfall bank issue you guys discussed. This issue has been looked at and has been confirmed by AV(company behind Darkfall) that they will add a function to upgrade the banks, so enemies that come to your city and get loot, will not be able to bank through your clan bank.
The second thing was what you said Yak, about how people QQing about DFo turned you off from it.
Well I met the same thing, when I was contemplating if I should start Darkfal or notl. I checked some youtube vids, went on my gut feeling, and have not had a regret since. All I can say is try it out, get yourself into a clan and experience some large scale city sieges, sea-warfare, pvp based on SKILL, and a world where players actually have a large impact on the game.
Im sure Ryan can help you experience some of the great things in DFO, especially since you can do all these things from day one.
Anyways, just had to get that off,
Keep the casts up,

Travel time is such a pain in other MMOs. I’m so used to DDO that I see a 10 minute trip from one NPC to another to be super-annoying. I know some people love the “open world” feel of lengthy travel, but to me it’s a waste of time and development resources.
I’ve said it before, but a hardcore or permadeath server would be the coolest server with the tiniest population…
Nice show!
