Have to agree with you guys, like Gespenst said monthly fee’s are over, that boat sailed years ago.

I think the entire mmo genre, and or monthly fee’s is heading back into a niche setting. Not sure if it was the fact that every company out there wanted a slice of the 15 a month pie EQ established years ago or that like many other things it had its heyday and now its over.

With the rise of social media, mmo’s lost allot of its desirability. What i mean by this is that mmo’s before facebook/social era, smart phones, constantly in touch with the world, mmo’s had an alluring draw of mystery or “coolness” about the fact that that you could meet and socialize with people around the world while playing games. For all intents, mmo’s were more of a facebook of its time.

With so many mmo games out there and losing the social aspect draw, i doubt monthly fee’s will exist outside of a small niche of titles. As an example look at Guitar Hero, Rock Band, they had their heyday and now it’s over, mmo’s are only milking it longer because too many companies are trying to milk the genre than trying to reinvent the genre.

Not sure but was checking out some swtor footage from E3 and i noticed i was more interested in the game i could hear in the background, i honestly hope they aren’t going to try and go monthly sub with this game as they are going to be in for rude awakening, afraid they are way to late to the $15 a month party specially after bringing zilch to the table.

Honestly the best thing to happen to mmo’s in a long time was Rift, it did allot about bringing massive multi back into the genre. Even still a crazy one time fee of 20 bucks has given me more online social interaction, twists to gaming, and fun than anything else in a very long time, yes i’m talking about Minecraft. Lasting appeal atm i can understand being limited for certain people but Prepare to witness many games coming out based on or including these concepts, heck games are already starting to show up, can’t wait, going to be some good years ahead as talented devs get going on this new medium/concept and break out of the old mmo molds.
