@Yak: RE the who kills whom comment around the 33 min mark, you are correct concerning tab target games, and games that factor level into dice rolls; however, in DFO, i have seen it time and again, if the “lower level” guy has more twitch, he can kill a better developed toon any day. Listen to the cast I talk about 2 of us, near max level, with armor and great weapons unable to kill a naked dude… it’s because his twitch, sit awareness, and other play skillz kept him alive.
-
@Yak: yes, we do need to cast, but no, i dont think you understand my position. my shock RE players and darkfall, is simply that there arent more people willing to seriously try it (you did not seriously try it
). I definitely know it’s not for everybody. One simple example is Vanguard… it used to be more complex, people complained, so they dumbed it down. Darkfall is not a game for people who need simple, want to buy cute things from a cash shop, or need to be the baddest ass b/c the game makes them so (ie levels)… I completely agree with that. For those that are tired of the same spoon fed mmo crap, then they should give darkfall an ernest review. Given certain factors, however, it might be best for them to try dfo 2. -
@Ryan: Here is the problem. I am all about something being complex. However, it’s the fact that no one wants to spend the time for such a huge learning curve on a game with a dying population. The problem is that for DFO in it’s current state, it’s paste its prime for new players. It kills be because I do really want to like this game. However, I have yet to play an AAA Sandbox title. Hopefully, they have learned from their mistakes when and if DFO 2 comes out.
-
RE learning curve and dying pop – fair. But since the game is so cheap, and playing other mmos is like playing with baked play-do, it’s worth a solid try.
Even though it’s not “AAA”, it has the best mmo fps engine. So what does AAA really have to do with anything? Age of Conan was AAA and was shit, like so many others. How about Aion? I mean AAA just means you know they have $ to do it well, and if they dont, then you’re being doubly fucked.
-
Also, the last 20 seconds of this review also works for DFO, to an extent: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/6276-DayZ?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=videos&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

@Ryan: To be a AAA title means a game put out by a big company that is not an indie company. They have the resources to make the game playable and fix most of the major bugs. The problem is that DFO is dying and to me it’s not worth playing a monthly fee for a dying game. The game will be dead in one of two ways. DFO 2 comes out or the company goes under and DFO doesn’t coem out. I really hope that isn’t the case. I agree with you that there was a point in time that maybe if they offered the 10 bucks a month while the game was thriving, that would have been my chance. The other disheartening thing after hearing more of Lord Smurf, is that there are a lot of fucking assholes to just try to make other players miserable. That and people get easily butt hurt. That and EvE seem like a community of people that are just out to grief others and ruin the game for noobs like me just trying to learn it. Yes, we need to do some major castage!

@Yak: {read my vomit}
I think your DFO analysis is off. You’ll have to actually get into it to understand it. We should cast sometime and I’ll hammer you for giving me this sore ass. You made a few statements that on their face are sort of misleading… like if DFO was so great, then why isnt Val Roth still playing. Simple answer – that dude, and others logged a hell of a lot of time. Personally, any other mmo has been unable to hold my attention. So the vastness of darkfall is alluring to me.
RE your comment on graphics… A. they are not bad, B. their are plenty of games out there people play with weak graphics… so I dont think graphics is what’s driving people away. I will accept that a negative judgment on graphics might prevent people from buying, but it’s hard to believe it’s responsible for pushing active players away.
You might have nailed it when you said maybe Darkfall is for players who are burnt out on mmos. I buy that… in fact Darkfall has made all other mmos simple and boring.
Full loot is awesome, and if you actually play darkfall, you wouldnt have a problem with it. Full loot in EQ1 is death, but in DFO it’s nothing.
RE the my 3 month comment – if that was about EVE… the way eve was described is that a player cant do fun shit for 3 months (add on top of that the lack of action… as I understand it). This is NOT the same in darkfall. Taking these 2 snippets (Val Roth and then mine) dont fit or prove anything.
I might have to have you repeat all this stuff to me in a cast so I can dismantle it. It is fair to say that you dont want 60 macros, macros at all, full loot, etc. Hearing your regurg of things you arent familiar with definitely dont do dfo justice… we’ll have to cast some time
BTW, I do agree dfo isnt for everybody, but I also think not enough people have actually tried it, and those who have, have not actually played it. Logging on and seeing some shit doesnt qualify. All I can say is that the biggest quester, pve dude I know loves darkfall.
Talk to you later!
